Green Globe award confirmed

After winning the coveted “Green Globe” Sustainability Award in 2010, the Maritim Hotel Bonn once more confirmed its environmental achievements in October 2012.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

In Bonn, the designated United Nations city and important site of the UN Climate Conference, the Maritim Hotel Bonn was again presented with the coveted “Green Globe” award on 22nd October 2012 – an honour it first obtained in 2010.

The Green Globe awards are valid for two years, followed by an assessment to determine whether the distinction can be confirmed for another two years. To receive the two-year recognition, at least 51 per cent of a total of several hundred criteria must be satisfied – the Maritim Hotel Bonn met 87 per cent of these criteria. Philipp Gagel, Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Maritim Hotel Bonn, who is leading the Sustainability project, is delighted: “Environmental success can only be achieved through consistency. And you must be willing to approach your goal with small but consistent steps. The fact that we have again been awarded this Green Globe award proves to me that we are on the right track.” The achievements of the environmental initiative include energy-saving measures such as the use of modern, energy-efficient minibars. But waste disposal requirements – sorting, recycling and reduction – are also mandatory. The role of waste reduction is just as important as that of rigorous and conscientious sorting: from the avoidance of individually packaged condiments and sauces to a preference for purchasing goods from regional producers and fair-trade products such as chocolate and organic coffee. The Green Globe award is recognised in nearly 200 countries.

The hotel’s efforts are not lost on guests either. Many of the hotel’s packages include the Bonn Welcome Card, with its many benefits and local public transport ticket. In addition, guests can hire the hotel’s own bicycles for a small extra charge.

Since 2007, the Maritim Hotel Bonn has been committed to working with its sister hotel in Königswinter towards sustainability on the environmental, economic and social fronts and has joined the Sustainable Bonn initiative.

The Maritim Hotelgesellschaft is Germany’s leading hotel group and the company’s nationwide hotel network is complemented by hotels in seven countries overseas: Mauritius, Egypt, Turkey, Malta, Spain, China and Latvia. The group’s ongoing expansion continues to strengthen its position within the European first-class hotel industry. For more information, please visit www.maritim.com
